Final Program

"Just Responses to Challenging Times"

The International Studies Association-West invites proposals for panels and papers on all aspects of international studies for its 2006 Annual Meeting to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada September 29-30, 2006. Especially welcome are proposals around the theme, "Just Responses to Challenging Times."

The first five years of the 21st century have been characterized by substantial change and turmoil in global politics.  This change and turmoil have brought a number of ethical issues to the center of the international policy stage, as international actors debate justice, human rights, and the distribution of material wealth.  Natural disasters such as the Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina and increasingly visible international epidemics have raised questions about unequal access to rescue resources. Other environmental and economic threats incite fierce debates over causation and responsibility. Likewise, bloody conflicts and civil wars, along with their aftermath, have given new import to the meaning of wrong, retribution, justice, and forgiveness. These debates take place within an international system polarized by the 9/11 attacks and the American response, characterized by a “with us or against us” mentality that complicates the search for universal ethical principles.

We invite proposals for papers and panels that seek both to shed light on the challenges and to explore just resolutions to them, as well as proposals dealing with other aspects of international relations including teaching and learning. Panels should include 3-4 participants in addition to a chair and discussant. Roundtable discussions, in which participants do not present papers, are also invited. Paper proposals are also welcome.

Please submit your proposals, with full contact information and abstracts, to isawest@gmail.com.
